DCTA Statement Regarding Bruce Randolph Waiver Proposal

January 8, 2008

Kim Ursetta, President

303-831-0590

DCTA is committed to providing great public schools for all Denver students. We want to ensure that our schools have the tools and resources necessary to succeed, and are held accountable to multiple measures of achievement. In addition, we recognize the innovation and dedication of the Bruce Randolph School staff and applaud the growth and improvement they have made. We have and will continue to steadfastly support reforms that result in increased student success.

We know that meaningful and authentic reform works when there is collaboration with all stakeholders.  DCTA is committed to supporting the Bruce Randolph staff to ensure that all questions are answered, and all issues are given careful consideration prior to a vote on the waiver request.

As the DPS Board of Education and Bruce Randolph School determines which DPS policies impede student achievement, we will work with the Bruce Randolph staff and DPS to determine if there are any barriers to student achievement in the DPS/DCTA Agreement so that all Denver teachers and students can benefit.

Motion approved by the DCTA Board:

The DCTA Board directs the DCTA Leadership to work collaboratively with the DPS Administration, the Bruce Randolph Staff and DPS Board of Education to clarify the waiver request and to identify which provisions in the contract, if any, impede student achievement. Following such determination a proposal may be submitted to DCTA and DPS that would achieve the goals of the school without unnecessary waivers of existing contract provisions.  Further, the DCTA Board requests that every effort will be made to present such findings at the January 22, 2008 Board of Directors meeting for further action.
