About Us

Who We Are: The Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) is a professional organization of recognized leaders representing nearly 3,200 educators, including classroom teachers and specialized service providers. DCTA advocates for the rights and responsibilities of these educators and for an ethical system of quality public education for all students.

DCTA is a highly democratic, representative organization affiliated with the 37,000-member Colorado Education Association (CEA) and the 2.7 million-member National Education Association (NEA).  Each school elects at least one teacher to represent the building at Representative Council, the policy making and legislative body of DCTA.

The Board of Directors is made up of full-time teachers who serve members across the district. The Board makes all corporate decisions for DCTA, which are then approved by the Representative Council.

The DCTA President is released full-time from teaching duty to be able to serve the membership and direct the organization.

2006-2007 DCTA Officers and Board of Directors

DCTA policies and procedures are governed through adherence to the Standing Rules and By-Laws.

DCTA employs 3 full-time, professional staff and 2 associate staff to manage the day-to-day activities and provide assistance to members.  Their employment is made possible by an NEA program in which staff funding is shared by the national and state associations.  NEA trains them to be experts in areas of importance to teachers. These important employees are part of the larger Denver UniServ Unit (DUU).

Our Vision: The Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) is a professional organization of recognized educational leaders. We advocate for the rights and responsibilities of all educators and for an ethical system of quality public education for all students.

Our Beliefs and Values: Teacher unions must provide leadership for the collective voice of their members. Teacher unions have a responsibility to students, families, and to the broader society. Teacher unions are committed to public education as a vital element of American democracy. What unites these responsibilities is our commitment to help all children learn. We affirm the union's responsibility to collaborate with other stakeholders in public education to:

  • Improve continuously the quality of the teaching force
  • Seek consistently higher levels of student achievement
  • Promote in public education and in the union democratic dynamics, fairness, and due process for all
  • Improve on an ongoing basis the terms and conditions under which both adults and children work and learn
